“Men of Able endured the atrocities of war — those of us that came home endure the pain of loss.”
Over nearly two decades in uniform, James Browning led paratroopers and armor crews from the surge in Iraq to the counter-ISIS campaign in Mosul — and carries the weight of every name he brought home, and every name he didn’t.
As a company commander south of Baghdad in 2007, he commanded Able Company, 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment. During nearly two years in command, the deployment cost five of his brothers killed and seven wounded; across the brigade, more than eighty were lost.
“It is their losses that I mourn, it is my burden to carry.”
While he commanded 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Mosul during the 2017 counter-ISIS campaign, it took seven months and thousands of lives to reach that point.
