Challenge coins are given to service members as an unofficial way to recognize achievement or celebrate unit involvement. As the name suggests, service members accept the challenge of duty to the country, and the challenge coin is returned here. This coin wall is still being filled: an open slot at the top lets visitors keep dropping coins in, stacking on the ones before them. Each service member who returns a coin provides an email address and receives a Challenge Accepted Challenge Returned coin in exchange, and that email list is how the plaque donation program reaches veterans. Once the wall fills up, a local artist or woodworker, preferably a veteran-owned business, will seal the coins into the display, and the finished piece will be auctioned. Those funds support building additional coin drops, purchasing exchange coins, and pre-paid postage so veterans can send in plaques that have sat in storage or garages, so their stories can be told on the wall and online.
